Title: Jamie Row, Row, Your Boat
Genre: Poetry
Author: Joanne Oppenheim
Major awards: N/a
Age group: 3-5 years

Teacher Evaluation: I would read this book in a pre-k or kinder class because smaller children would enjoy it. Students can relate to the little boy in the tub. They can make connections with their personal lives. I would use this book when teaching about transportation since the books gives many examples about it.

Summary: This book is about a little boy who is in the tub playing with his toys. He starts to dream about boats, canoe, river raft, ship, and more sorts of transportations. He uses his imagination to think what would happen when he uses a certain transportation. This is a great read aloud because students can singalong to the book with a beat.

Title: Monster Goose
Genre: Poetry
Author: Judy Sierra
Major awards: N/a
Age group: 6-10

Teacher Evaluation: As a teacher, I would read a different poem every day for the month of October to 1st-4th graders. I can use the poems as a writing assignment for students. They can write their own Halloween poem and use the book as examples.

Summary: This book contain short poems about different characters, books, or nursery rhymes. It talks about popular characters like Humpty Dumpty, Jack Sprat, and Werewolf boy, but changes the story. The overall theme of this book is Halloween or "spooky" poems, so the author twists the story to make it seem scary.

Title: There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly
Genre: Poetry
Author: Pam Adams
Major awards: Caldecott medal
Age group: 4-8 years

Teacher Evaluation: I would read aloud this book to a 2rd or 3rd grade class. Students will find the book fun to read and love the illustrations. For an assuagement, students can predict what would happen next and write their own short story.

Summary: This book is about an old lady who swallowed a fly so she kept on swallowing different animals to get the fly. She swallowed a spider, bird, cat, dog, and a cow until she finally died. This book is great for students to read because the illustrations go along with the poem and can visually see what the author is talking about. It is also repetitive, so students can practice repetition.

Summary: This books is about three different babies and their relationship with different family members. One is about their relationship with their dad, grandma, and mom. It explains what they do to show their love and affection. The book is repetitive, so it is great for smaller children to listen to and understand love.

Title: Black is a Rainbow Color

Teacher Evaluation: I think this is such a great book. I love how the author talks about different important events that make up the black community. I would read this book to kinder-3rd graders, so they can understand that we are all the same even though we look different or come from other backgrounds. This would be a good book to read when teaching about culture.

Summary: This book is about a girl who talks about her culture. She mentions the different colors of the rainbow but black isn't one of them.
