Teacher Evaluation: I would read aloud this book to my students because it gives a great message. It not only talks about the Civil Rights Movement, but it also talks about learning and how it it never too late to learn. This is a picture book so 1st or 2nd grade would enjoy this read aloud. 

Summary: The Oldest Students is about an old African American woman who learned how to read at the age of 116. She was born into slavery, therefore she was not allowed to learn how to read or write. However, that did not stop her from achieving her goals. 



Title: My Best Pop-up Space Book 
Genre: non-fiction 
Author: Caryn Jenner and Clare Lloyd
Major awards: N/A 
Age group: 4-5 years  

Teacher Evaluation: This book would be great use for kindergarten or 1st grade. The pop-up pictures would capture students attention. Most likely, students can read this book themselves or a read aloud when learning about space. 

Summary: This book is about space and everything that is in space. It talks about the planets, sun, moon, stars, and more. It gives great characteristics about each object.  Students can learn from this book. 


Title: Who Was Martin Luther King, Jr.?  
Genre: Non-Fiction/Multicultural
Author: Lisbeth Kaiser and Stanley Chow
Major awards: N/A 
Age group: 4-5 years  

Teacher Evaluation: I would love to read aloud this book to my students when leaning about MLK. It gives a great description of who Martin Luther King was. This is a picture book, therefore kindergarten and 1st grade would enjoy the reading. 

Summary: This book is a biography about Martin Luther King. It talks about his childhood and how he grew up to be the person he was. It talks about what he did to gain rights for his people. Also, his movements and achievements. 

 


Title: When the Beat was Born: DJ Kool Herc and the Creation of Hip Hop
Genre: Non-Fiction
Author: Laban Carrick Hill
Major awards: Bluebonnet award
Age group: 4-5 years  

Teacher Evaluation: I would read aloud this book to 1st or 2nd grade. I think they have background knowledge of what Hip Hip music is and would like to know where it started from.  

Summary: This book is about how Kool Herc became a DJ. His music stopped fights in gangs so they can dance to his music. Also, the music he invented became popular and created a new culture in which we still use now. 



Title: Togo 
Genre: Non-Fiction
Author: Robert Blake
Major awards: Bluebonnet award 
Age group: 6-7 years  

Teacher Evaluation: This book would be a great read aloud to 2nd or 3rd grade. Students would love to hear a story about a dog since at this age the love animals. I think they will enjoy the reading and be amused by the sled dogs. 

Summary: Togo is about a dog who was not capable of becoming a sled dog. However, his trainer pushed him and before he knew it, he was the fastest sled dog in history. Him and his trainer, went on a run across the the frozen Arctic to deliver a serum that saved people from a life threatening outbreak.

  Title: Wonder  Genre: Fiction  Author: R.J Palacio  Major awards: Maine Student book award  Age group: 8-12 years   Teacher Evaluation: I think this is such a beautiful book. I would want my students to read and learn the message the novel brings. The book is easy to read, however I would probably recommend 4th or 5th graders to read it. This novel can be read at any time during the school year.  Summary: This book is about a 10 year old name August Pullman. He is a regular kid who likes to do regular activities. However, his face makes him abnormal. He has had several surgeries on his face which makes him look far from normal. This book talks about the journey he goes through as being an "odd" child living in society.

Title: Emmanuel's Dream Genre: non-fiction    Author: Laurie Thompson  Major awards: NA   Age group: 5-8 years Teacher Evaluation: I would want to read this book to my class. Preferably 3rd or 4th grade. It is important that students learn to accept others despite of their disabilities.  Summary: This book is about a boy named Emmanuel born in West African. He has one deformed leg and most people look down on him. They excluded him and do not want to be around him. However, his mother has always been his supporter and encourages him to follow his dreams.

Title: Junie B. First Grader: Jingle Bells, Batman Smells! Genre: fiction    Author: Barbara Park  Major awards: NA   Age group: 7-9 years Teacher Evaluation: I personally am a fan of Junie B Jones books so I would want my students to listen to this audio book. It would be a fun book to read during the Holidays. Second graders would enjoy Junie's Christmas spirit.   Summary: This book is another collection added to the Junie B Jones series. It is a Holiday edition for Christmas. Junie is in the Holiday spirit but some of her classmates are not, especially May.  They try to ruin her spirit but she does not let it get to her.
