Teacher Evaluation: This book could be read in 1st or 2nd grade. It shows the importance of pronouncing a person's name correctly matters to them. It shows respect and kindness towards them. Maybe if there is a student with a non common name or pronunciation, the class can learn how to properly say it.   

 
Summary: Your Name is a Song is about a little girl whose name is mispronounced at school by her teachers and peers. She does not want to go back to school, so her mom teachers her about songs. She finds a fun way for her daughter to turn something bad into something good.  


Title: The Power of Her Pen

Teacher Evaluation: I would read aloud this book in kindergarten/1st grade. I think it not only shows Civil Rights but also women empowerment. It is an important topic to talk about and make sure everyone's voice is heard. 

Summary: This book is about Ethel Payne who was a journalist during the Civil Rights movement. She was the first black women in the White House briefing room as a journalist. She was not afraid to let her voice be heard and was title "First Lady of the Black Press". 

Title: Saturday's Are for Stella

Teacher Evaluation: Saturday's Are for Stella is a great read aloud for kindergarten or 1st grade. The theme of adapting to a new family member can be relevant in students lives. Maybe they are also going through the same situation and can learn from George.  

Summary: This book is about George and his grandma. He loves to spend Saturday's with her and create new memories. His grandma dies and he becomes very upset. However, a new sister named Stella has him busy and enjoys his Saturday's again. 

Title: What I Like Most

Teacher Evaluation: I would love to read this sweet story to kindergarten! It talks about appreciating what they love. Throughout the book they reflect on what they love in their lives. 

Summary: This book is about a little girl who talks about all the things she loves. Even though some of her favorite stuff will worn out, she will still love them. At the end, she talks about her mom and how she is what she loves most in the world. 


Title: Families Belong

Teacher Evaluation: I would read aloud this book to kindergarten because it shows different types of families. Students many relate to some of the activities that they do with their families and want to share with the class. 

Summary: Families Belong is a book about what families do together. They sing, ride bikes, have dinner, and even clean up together. It shows a beautiful perspective about families. 

Title: Brick By Brick

Author: Heidi Woodward Sheffield

Teacher Evaluation: I absolutely love this book! I will read it aloud to kindergarten or 1st grade. It shows a beautiful father and son relationship.  However, as a teacher we do not know what occurs in a students household, so I would want to make sure students will not feel sad about the book. 

Summary: This book is about Luis and his relationship with his dad. Luis's dad works a lot and is a hard worker. But that does not stop him from spending time with his son. He is a role model to Luis and he always acts like his dad.
