Title: The Oldest Student  Genre: Non-Fiction  Author: Rita Hubbard  Major awards: N/A Age group: 6-8 years   Teacher Evaluation: I would read aloud this book to my students because it gives a great message. It not only talks about the Civil Rights Movement, but it also talks about learning and how it it never too late to learn. This is a picture book so 1st or 2nd grade would enjoy this read aloud.  Summary: The Oldest Students is about an old African American woman who learned how to read at the age of 116. She was born into slavery, therefore she was not allowed to learn how to read or write.   Title: Wonder  Genre: Fiction  Author: R.J Palacio  Major awards: Maine Student book award  Age group: 8-12 years   Teacher Evaluation: I think this is such a beautiful book. I would want my students to read and learn the message the novel brings. The book is easy to read, however I would probably recommend 4th or 5th graders to read it. This novel can be read at any time during the school year.  Summary: This book is about a 10 year old name August Pullman. He is a regular kid who likes to do regular activities. However, his face makes him abnormal. He has had several surgeries on his face which makes him look far from normal. This book talks about the journey he goes through as being an "odd" child living in society. 

Title: I Survived The Sinking Of The Titanic, 1912  Genre: Historical Fiction  Author: Lauren Tarshis Major awards: NA Age group: 7 -10 years   Teacher Evaluation: This book would fit 3rd and 4th graders. I think it would interest students because the main character is around their age. Therefore, I would assign book club groups. Students can answer various questions about their reading.  Summary: This book is about a ten-year old named George and his adventure in the Titanic. He travels with his sister and aunt. At first they were having fun, but once the ship hit an ice berg, they were fighting for their lives.   Title: Esperanza Rising  Genre: Historical Fiction/Multicultural book Author: Pam Munoz Ryan  Major awards: Newberry Award  Age group: 8-10 years   Teacher Evaluation: I think this book shows value in Esperanza's culture. Title: Same, Same but Different  Genre: Realistic fiction/ Multicultural   Author: Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw  Major awards: NA Age group: 4-7 years   Teacher Evaluation: I loved this book! It shows how people can have different lifestyles but are still the same in some way. This book would be great to read aloud in Kindergarten -2nd grade when learning about cultural differences. After the book, students can write a letter about their world and how they live.  Summary: This book is about two boys who live in different places. They send each other letters talking about their families, education, homestyle, and personal lives. They realized they do everything the same but somehow it is still different.   Title: Charlotte's Web Genre: Fantasy/Audio book  Author: Maurice E.B White  Major awards: Newbery  Age group: 6-9 years  Teacher Evaluation: I read this book when I was in elementary and loved it. Therefore, I would use this book in my classroom. The audiobook is perfect for students to follow along with their book. The appropriate grade level for this book is 3rd-5th grade. The book would be read when learning about fantasy. Students can think about what it would be like to have their pets or animals talk.  Summary: This book is about a pig named, "Wilbur", who is friends with a spider named, "Charlotte". They live in a farm together with other animals, but Wilbur is worried because they are going to kill him. However, Charlotte tells him she will come up with a plan to save him. Throughout the book, they create a beautiful friendship . 

Title: Where the Wild Things are  Genre: Fantasy  Author: Maurice Sendak  Major awards: Caldecott Medal  Age group: 4-7 years  Teacher Evaluation: I would definitely use this book in my classroom. I think it a classic book to read aloud. The grade level for this book would be 1st-2nd grade. After the read aloud, my students can write or draw about their own "Wild Things" and use their creativity.  Summary: This book is about a boy who has a big imagination. While he is asleep, he thinks about being in an island and meeting creatures called, "Wild Things". At first, the Wild Things try to scared the boy but he is not afraid of them.   Title: The War that Saved my Life  Genre: Historial Fiction  Author: Kimberly Brubaker Bradley  Major awards: Newbery  Age group: 10-15 Teacher Evaluation: I think this is a great book for older students. This is a chapter book, so it would probably better for middle school-high school students to read it.  Some days I could read aloud one or two chapters or let students read the book by themselves. At the end of the chapter, there would be a class discussions to questions to answer. This would be a great book assignment for students to practice their comprehension skills.  Summary: The setting is during World War II about a girl who can not walk due to her twisted foot. Her mom is ashamed of her, treats her bad, and does not let her leave their home. She has a younger brother who she loves and protects him. She wants a better life for them, so they escaped. They both find a better place to live at so she is finally able to grow and enjoy her life....
