It shows the importance of pronouncing a person's name correctly matters to them. It shows respect and kindness towards them. Maybe if there is a student with a non common name or pronunciation, the class can learn how to properly say it.      Summary: Your Name is a Song is about a little girl whose name is mispronounced at school by her teachers and peers. She does not want to go back to school, so her mom teachers her about songs. Title: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Genre: Fantasy fiction    Author: Lewis Carroll Major awards: NA  Age group: 4-5 years Teacher Evaluation: This book would be perfect for my kindergarten or 1st grade classroom to read. Since it is a pop-up book, they will be engage. Summary: This book is about a girl named Alice who falls asleep and dreams about falling into a rabbit hole. She follows the white rabbit through out the book and goes on different adventures. 

Title: Junie B. First Grader: Jingle Bells, Batman Smells! Genre: fiction    Author: Barbara Park  Major awards: NA   Age group: 7-9 years Teacher Evaluation: I personally am a fan of Junie B Jones books so I would want my students to listen to this audio book. It would be a fun book to read during the Holidays. Second graders would enjoy Junie's Christmas spirit.   Summary: This book is another collection added to the Junie B Jones series. It is a Holiday edition for Christmas. Junie is in the Holiday spirit but some of her classmates are not, especially May.  They try to ruin her spirit but she does not let it get to her. 

Title: Emmanuel's Dream Genre: non-fiction    Author: Laurie Thompson  Major awards: NA   Age group: 5-8 years Teacher Evaluation: I would want to read this book to my class. Preferably 3rd or 4th grade. It is important that students learn to accept others despite of their disabilities.  Summary: This book is about a boy named Emmanuel born in West African. He has one deformed leg and most people look down on him. They excluded him and do not want to be around him. However, his mother has always been his supporter and encourages him to follow his dreams. 

  Title: Not So Different  Genre: fiction    Author: Cyana Riley  Major awards: Coretta Scott King   Age group: 4-7 years Teacher Evaluation: I will for sure read this book in my classroom! Kindergarten and 1st grade can learn a lot from this book. They can learn to accept everyone even though they do not look the same.  Summary: This story is about a girl who talks about being different. Her mom is black and her dad is white but together they make the right family. She talks about being different from other but they can learn from each other and love one another. 

  Title: Finding Winnie  Genre: Non-fiction    Author: David Shannon  Major awards: Caldecott medal  Age group: 4-7 years Teacher Evaluation: This is a great book to read aloud. Kindergarten and 1st grade students would enjoy reading a book about a bear and learn about the animal.  Summary: Finding Winnie is about a Canadian who saves a bear cub. He names it Winnie and natures it. He creates a connection with the cub but when he was sent to combat, he takes him to the London zoo. Title: We are Water Protectors   Genre: Historical fiction    Author: Carole Lindstrom   Major awards: Caldecott medal  Age group: 4-7 years Teacher Evaluation: I would love to read this book in a kindergarten or 1st grade class because it is simple to understand. Title: A Bad Case of Stripes  Genre: Fiction    Author: David Shannon  Major awards: Bluebonnet  Age group: 4-7 years Teacher Evaluation: I would want to read this book to 1st grade or second grade class. I would most likely read this book in the beginning of the school year because this book takes place during the that time. As a teacher, I would use this book to welcome students in the classroom and make them feel comfortable.  Summary: A Bad Case of Stripes is about a girl name Camilia. She wakes up with rainbows stripes all over her body. It seems like whatever people say, her skin turns into it. It is a little bit on the darker side and I don''t how they would comprehend the book. I would want to make sure they are at the level or age to read these kind of books. Therefore, fourth or firth grade would enjoy this book. Summary: The book is about two foxes who were separated from each other. They try to find their way back home in the cruel world by themselves. Title: The Oldest Student  Genre: Non-Fiction  Author: Rita Hubbard  Major awards: N/A Age group: 6-8 years   Teacher Evaluation: I would read aloud this book to my students because it gives a great message. It not only talks about the Civil Rights Movement, but it also talks about learning and how it it never too late to learn. This is a picture book so 1st or 2nd grade would enjoy this read aloud.  Summary: The Oldest Students is about an old African American woman who learned how to read at the age of 116. She was born into slavery, therefore she was not allowed to learn how to read or write. However, that did not stop her from achieving her goals.  Title: My Best Pop-up Space Book  Genre: non-fiction  Author: Caryn Jenner and Clare Lloyd Major awards: N/A  Age group: 4-5 years   Teacher Evaluation: This book would be great use for kindergarten or 1st grade.   Title: Wonder  Genre: Fiction  Author: R.J Palacio  Major awards: Maine Student book award  Age group: 8-12 years   Teacher Evaluation: I think this is such a beautiful book. I would want my students to read and learn the message the novel brings. The book is easy to read, however I would probably recommend 4th or 5th graders to read it. This novel can be read at any time during the school year.  Summary: This book is about a 10 year old name August Pullman. He is a regular kid who likes to do regular activities. However, his face makes him abnormal. He has had several surgeries on his face which makes him look far from normal. This book talks about the journey he goes through as being an "odd" child living in society. 

Title: I Survived The Sinking Of The Titanic, 1912  Genre: Historical Fiction  Author: Lauren Tarshis Major awards: NA Age group: 7 -10 years   Teacher Evaluation: This book would fit 3rd and 4th graders. I think it would interest students because the main character is around their age. Therefore, I would assign book club groups. Students can answer various questions about their reading.  Summary: This book is about a ten-year old named George and his adventure in the Titanic. He travels with his sister and aunt. At first they were having fun, but once the ship hit an ice berg, they were fighting for their lives.   Title: Esperanza Rising  Genre: Historical Fiction/Multicultural book Author: Pam Munoz Ryan  Major awards: Newberry Award  Age group: 8-10 years   Teacher Evaluation: I think this book shows value in Esperanza's culture. It shows how people can have different lifestyles but are still the same in some way. This book would be great to read aloud in Kindergarten -2nd grade when learning about cultural differences. After the book, students can write a letter about their world and how they live.  Summary: This book is about two boys who live in different places. They send each other letters talking about their families, education, homestyle, and personal lives. They realized they do everything the same but somehow it is still different.   Title: Charlotte's Web Genre: Fantasy/Audio book  Author: Maurice E.B White  Major awards: Newbery  Age group: 6-9 years  Teacher Evaluation: I read this book when I was in elementary and loved it. Therefore, I would use this book in my classroom. The audiobook is perfect for students to follow along with their book. The appropriate grade level for this book is 3rd-5th grade. The book would be read when learning about fantasy. Students can think about what it would be like to have their pets or animals talk.  Summary: This book is about a pig named, "Wilbur", who is friends with a spider named, "Charlotte". They live in a farm together with other animals, but Wilbur is worried because they are going to kill him. However, Charlotte tells him she will come up with a plan to save him. Throughout the book, they create a beautiful friendship . 

Title: Where the Wild Things are  Genre: Fantasy  Author: Maurice Sendak  Major awards: Caldecott Medal  Age group: 4-7 years  Teacher Evaluation: I would definitely use this book in my classroom. I think it a classic book to read aloud. The grade level for this book would be 1st-2nd grade. After the read aloud, my students can write or draw about their own "Wild Things" and use their creativity.  Summary: This book is about a boy who has a big imagination. While he is asleep, he thinks about being in an island and meeting creatures called, "Wild Things". At first, the Wild Things try to scared the boy but he is not afraid of them.   Title: The War that Saved my Life  Genre: Historial Fiction  Author: Kimberly Brubaker Bradley  Major awards: Newbery  Age group: 10-15 Teacher Evaluation: I think this is a great book for older students. This is a chapter book, so it would probably better for middle school-high school students to read it.  Some days I could read aloud one or two chapters or let students read the book by themselves. At the end of the chapter, there would be a class discussions to questions to answer. This would be a great book assignment for students to practice their comprehension skills.  Summary: The setting is during World War II about a girl who can not walk due to her twisted foot. Her mom is ashamed of her, treats her bad, and does not let her leave their home. She has a younger brother who she loves and protects him. She wants a better life for them, so they escaped. They both find a better place to live at so she is finally able to grow and enjoy her life....

  Title: Jamie Row, Row, Your Boat Genre: Poetry Author: Joanne Oppenheim  Major awards: N/a Age group: 3-5 years  Teacher Evaluation: I would read this book in a pre-k or kinder class because smaller children would enjoy it. Students can relate to the little boy in the tub. They can make connections with their personal lives. I would use this book when teaching about transportation since the books gives many examples about it.  Summary: This book is about a little boy who is in the tub playing with his toys. He starts to dream about boats, canoe, river raft, ship, and more sorts of transportations. He uses his imagination to think what would happen when he uses a certain transportation.
